Values at Risk

Conserving and Protecting What We Care About

Water resources are highly valued in Eagle County. Streams and rivers support numerous cultural, social and intrinsic functions. They provide municipal water supply, create vibrant ecosystems, enhance the natural beauty of the landscape, and underpin the local tourism economy.

The CWP sought to identify how these values may be at risk in a changing and uncertain world. A shared understanding of system behavior is a crucial foundation for conversations regarding the potential impact of alternative water management approaches on ecosystem function or recreational use opportunity. The technical work of the plan is intended to support the development of that shared understanding

Risks can be conceptualized within a risk space relating 1) the likelihood of some negative impact to a value or attribute of concern and 2) the consequence of that impact. Varying degrees of likelihoods and consequences are indicated in the gray boxes. The associated level of risk to the value or attribute of concern is indicated in the colored boxes. The risk space is divided into four quadrants that suggest different response strategies and priorities. Values at Risk (VAR) identified during the CWP process are assigned to these four risk quadrants on the following pages.
